NATHAN ALTIER
Painting
Born in 1972, Nathan is a GenXer from rural southern Maryland. He spent most of his
childhood visually recreating anything that interested him. Name it, and he probably
attempted to interpret it in some art form or another. That led him to an A.A. in Visual
Communication. His early adulthood was spent earning a B.A. in Computer Art in the
starving artist world of Atlanta, Georgia. Now, a builder and married father of two
teenagers with a working homestead, he resides in the Shenandoah Valley of West
Virginia. And just like it did when he was a kid, his environment has greatly influenced
his artwork. Over the years, his creative media have varied, but the medium that has
captured his muse has been acrylic on canvas.
"Never wanting to waste my formal education (B.A. in Computer Art), I usually
conceptualize ideas digitally, then recreate them on canvas, using both on-canvas
blending and dry-brush techniques. My strength is portraits. However, the challenge of
reflective surfaces, the beautiful complexity of flowers, and the visceral themes of
patriotism always deliver surprising joy. Art is a fascinating balance of dreaming and
reality, which I am convinced, there’s always a challenge, a spiritual connection, and a
lesson to be learned."
