KAREN WINTERS
Watercolor, Ink
Karen loves the challenge of watercolor, especially transparent colors. Learning to capture images in watercolor has taught her to be more aware and observant of the less apparent color in almost everything, but especially things in natural light. Grey is not grey - it is many shades of blue, purple, green, and other colors - you just must look for them.
Primarily a realistic painter, Karen paints from photographs (her own and others with permission) that depict life and nature she finds interesting and challenging to interpret. She finds inspiration in painting flowers, especially "white" ones, that highlight the white through color. Karen also likes to paint birds and structures, and believes the latter stems from her 20+ years of marketing for an architecture firm in Syracuse, New York. She specializes in quick watercolor and ink residential paintings.
Karen has become a prolific watercolorist since discovering her "inner artist" in 2013. She is relentless in her pursuit to grow and flourish in her craft. She has taken multiple classes over the years with:
Anita Wood, award-winning professional and published artist. Anita is a signature member of CSPWC, Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour, and currently the Western Ontario Regional Director. Anita has taught classes and workshops in Ontario and in the Tampa Bay area since 2000. She is the founder of "Watercolors Larger than Life" series that Karen has taken.
Birgit O'Connor, award-winning professional and published artist. Birgit is a master of transparent watercolor with Master Signature Status in the NorthWest Watercolor Society, Louisiana Watercolor Society, and California Watercolor Society. She teaches in-person and online classes and is a featured instructor with many Art Centers and Watercolor Societies throughout the United States and Canada.
Karen's art has been selected four separate years for the ArtScape program sponsored by ShenArts that seeks to bring art to the people in downtown Winchester. She also has had four very successful solo art exhibits of her watercolors at the Shenandoah Lodge at Lake Frederick, Virginia.
She has been a member of Gateway Gallery Artists in Round Hill, Virginia since 2019, treasurer since 2021, and board of directors since 2023. Karen has been a member of the Shenandoah Arts Council since 2019.
